TRECS is a program that allows counties to collect unpaid property taxes owed to DeKalb County by intercepting individual income tax refunds.

Once a potential refund has been identified, a letter will be sent to the taxpayer of DeKalb County’s intent to claim the refund amount to apply towards the outstanding property tax debt.  If the delinquent taxes are not paid by the deadline, the clearing house will charge $20 and the Indiana Department of Revenue will impose a 15% fee; the treasurer receives only the balance up to the amount of outstanding debt.

You have the right to ask for an appeal board to review your case if you feel the tax interception should not apply to your situation.  Contact the Treasurer’s office at 260-925-2712 for more details.
