Re:  Property Tax News Release

DeKalb County property taxpayers will owe spring taxes on May 10th.  Tax statements were mailed Friday April 9th.  Fall taxes will be due November 10th.

In addition to the tax bill, taxpayers currently claiming a homestead deduction will also receive a homestead verification form.  Beginning in 2010, House Enrolled Act (HEA) 1344-2009 requires the tax statement to include a form that allows taxpayers to verify their residency and eligibility for the homestead deduction.  Each individual (and his or her spouse, if any) claiming the homestead deduction also is required to provide the last five digits of his or her social security number and driver’s license number.  This information will be used to populate a secure homestead database, which will be used by County Auditors to track homesteads statewide and prevent fraud.  The completed form needs to be returned to the COUNTY AUDITOR.  The homestead verification form must be completed by January 1, 2013.

DeKalb County taxpayers who maintain an escrow account will receive a tax statement indicating in blue ink “ESCROW BILLED”.  Taxpayers questioning whether or not their mortgage company will be paying their taxes are encouraged to contact their mortgage company.

As a reminder, due to the high cost of billing, both the spring and fall installments are billed at the same time.  You will not receive a separate bill for the fall installment.   There are penalties for paying late.  The penalty will be in the amount of 5% of the unpaid tax IF the installment is completely paid on or before thirty (30) days after the due date AND you are not liable for delinquent property taxes first due and payable in a previous installment for the same parcel.  Otherwise, the amount of penalty will be in the amount of 10% of the unpaid tax.

If you have any billing questions, please contact the Treasurer’s Office at 260-925-2712 or visit our website at www.co.dekalb.in.us .  If you have questions regarding the homestead verification form, please call the Auditor’s office at 260-925-2362 or if you need assessment information, please call the Assessor’s office at 260-925-1824.
